The soldiers were still debating the logistics of their alcohol-fueled plan when Stevens was told that there was a phone call for him. His squad leader, James Botsford, was on the line. Botsford was at Savannah Municipal Airport and asked Stevens to pick him up. Stevens then returned to Burger, and the two of them went to the kitchen and stole two knives. They then placed a call, summoning a D & M cab.

The driver who had the misfortune of picking up the fare was Roger Honeycutt, a Fort Stewart soldier who supplemented his military income by moonlighting as a cabbie. Honeycutt had taken his fellow soldiers just a few short miles when they drew their knives and forced him to pull over. They then robbed him of $20, all the money he had, and ordered him to remove his clothes. Burger then got behind the wheel while Stevens got in the back seat with Honeycutt. There, he forced the terrified young man to perform fellatio on him before raping him anally. He then tied Honeycutt’s hands with the microphone cord from the cab’s CB radio and shoved him into the trunk.
